Anthony S. Maulucci is an Italian
American poet, novelist and painter who has supported himself as a
college teacher, journalist, stage manager, editor, and publisher. He
has travelled widely and is passionately devoted to the cause of world
peace. He is the author,
most recently, of 100 Love Sonnets and Dear Dante, a novel about a
young man's search for meaning. He is also the author of poetry
chapbook, "All for Love," and of the novels The Discovery of Luminous
Being, about a Jewish father and son driven apart by the Vietnam war,
and The Rosselli Cantata, a revenge story that ends with forgiveness.
He believes that great art can be defined as art that has the power to
help us transcend ourselves and achieve a deeper love and respect for
one another. He grew up in Connecticut and has lived in Boston,
Montreal, Toronto and New York City. He currently resides in Mexico.
He relaxes by playing acoustic guitar
and is curently studying the art of flamenco in his spare time. You can

Writing fiction and poetry have been
central to my life for the last 40 years, and the demands of a career as
an English professor forced me to neglect my love for art. I have worked
as a visual artist only intermittently during the years I pursued
literary success and while writing and publishing books of fiction and
poetry. My training since high school has been sporadic, and, although
I've taken the occasional drawing class, I'd have to say I'm primarily
self-taught.
Why does an author of fiction and poetry create visual art? Is it
because he has ideas that can't be expressed in words? Perhaps, but more
often it is the same ideas that are expressed in different ways. Both my
poems and my paintings use imagery to convey deep emotion and make a
connection with the subconscious mind. I hope my images offer a
glimpse into some of the mysteries of the human psyche and tell a
timeless truth about the human experience.
I began painting in oils on a regular basis as a way of coping with the
anguish of a nasty divorce in 2003. A few years prior to this, my
interest in visual art was reawakened during a temporary assignment as
an English teacher at the Lyme Academy College of Art in Old Lyme,
Connecticut, USA. But what began as therapy blossomed into a serious
pursuit, and I gave studious attention to the work of the modernists,
particularly Gauguin, Matisse and Modigliani. People have remarked that
my work resembles theirs in some ways. I am not surprised.
Degas believed that painting is an act of observation and intelligence.
Working from memory and imagination, he was liberated from the demands
of nature. Matisse wished to be freed from the tyranny of the model. I
too am uninterested in creating highly realistic depictions of the
world. Why bother, when cameras can do that so very well. My inclination
is towards portraying the transformation of form by the intellect,
sensibilities, and soul of the artist. Timelessness is what I'm after.
Not classicism or modernism or post-modernism -- just an image suspended
in time.
Perhaps because of my background in writing, I am more concerned with
depicting the psychology of a character rather than a faithful physical
representation. I realize that my approach to painting will not resonate
with everyone, the way a naturalistic portrayal of a
person, place or object would. However, I have not abandoned naturalism
altogether. Rather, my work is a deviation from the actuality of the
person, place or object. I see with my imagination and my heart, and
invite the viewer to look at the world through my
mind's eye.
