M. M. Adjarian is an art photographer based in Tucson, Arizona whose foray into the visual arts began in 2006 when she was recuperating from serious illness. At that time, she began shooting landscapes using a 35mm Minolta X-700 SLR camera. She then enrolled in a year-long film photography class at the Tucson city college where she learned darkroom technique and developed an interest in photographic experimentation. Her final project, entitled “Southwest Surreal,” was shot using a Holga 120N camera and expired black and white Ilford HP5 film: the images in this series convey the dark wonder of living in a fragile, isolated oasis surrounded by an often unforgiving desert world.
Ms. Adjarian works primarily with vintage (Ikoflex, Agfa, Pouva Start, Ansco Standard Speedex), toy (Diana, Holga) and pinhole film cameras. She also works with expired films and cross-processes much of her work to achieve the (deliberate) imperfections, special effects and unusual color tonalities that are a hallmark of her photography. She also does digital work using a Pentax *istDS SLR camera. Taken together, the unique, sometimes startling and surreal images that comprise her work are as nostalgically evocative as they are expressive of the psychological undergrounds of memory, fantasy, desire, alienation and loneliness that she explores. She is a regular contributor to Flickr, an online photographic website. Her latest images can be viewed at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mmadjarian. |
