My name is Åke Johansson and I was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on February 22, 1959. I am an self taught artist who up until now mainly have drawn pencil portraits. I will take up oil painting as well. I will try to paint on paper, I have never tried that before, only on canvas. It will be interesting to try it. And then I will chose other motives besides just portraits.
I work with art for the mere fun of it. I am not into deeper abstract things, like expressing my soul or anything like that. It is more challenging for me trying to capture and visualize the soul of the people that I portray. It is not the easiest thing to do of course, it is done most of all through the eyes, but also the expression as a whole. To me art work is entertainment first and foremost, like movies. And movies are just the thing that have inspired me the most so far. But I does not have to be celebrities from the cinema or otherwise, it is just as fullfilling to portray people, whomever it might be.
Faces that are well known to the public is always a challenge to portray, because everyone who has seen them in a moive or elsewhere certainly has a vision of their own somehow in their minds. It becomes a mix, my work, of my own interpretation of their looks and what is generally known. I can not get away, and goes for most of all other artists I think, entirely from my own personal vision even though I try as faithfully as I know how to portray them as they really look. In other words, the more viewers that recognize them, the more fulfilling for me.
