Simon P Laurent Photography France

Biography:

First of all, I would like to say that some of my works are based on reality observation and my journeys... It is often said that photography has a memory function. But it's not my state of mind, at least not anymore.... I only make a few photos to remember what I saw and I prefer to remember the things by myself : It is what really matters. Moreover, I'm not really looking for (or not any more) to set the things in a relationship between time and space, even if my works are dated...

Two main axes in my work: I like to immerse myself in some European cities that now tend to look the same : globalisation, lack of identity and even authenticity. And for me, it's a kind of frustration, and it's hard to find a way out.

This admission of failure ( nothing to see neither with a refusal to face off the things nor a inhability to appreciate the things at their own values ) leads me to recreate another faded and altered reality.... It's not a representation (reproduction) of a world, but of the construction of my own world.

I try to suggest and to create a personal space with his own codes : what the filmmakers and the semiologists call «diagèse ». But my universe is not confined to the cities, and sometime it is nice to go for a walk in the nature just to see the results of the mess we made : Paradoxically, I like to experience the fear when I see nature collapsing under my eyes: I see so many overwhelming moments (storms for instance.)

In fact, I'm in a process of experimentation , deconstruction and recontruction ... I select certain details, reproduce them, and reject some other : cities, buildings....
While working with black and white I often try to create dark, ambiguous, mysterious and frosty athmospheres.... My style is partly related to my environment: often austere, and linked to the interactions I have with the people…. Another inspiration? Surrealism as well as my passion for contemporary American architecture. Last but not least, I must say that B and H Becher have blown my mind, even if their style are not visible on my pictures
My other works are clearly inspired by the picturialism, French naturalist photography but they feel old and washed but all the tightness of their materiality is new....

Most of the time, I use several techniques; including argentic photography and digital photography. The digital production I engage in can not and does not have to be conceived as a single pure medium. Unlike artists who work exclusively on and through the Web, the following images exist outside of the digital system that produced them... In this way it's also possible to keep the photography for what it is. Sometimes I like to mix my photography with other techniques,such as pastel, to make patchworks or collages

Some of my works can be seen as paintings : In fact, I try to work as a photographer – painter... Or a painter – photographer ( it's up to you ) .... In any case, light working is very important....

According to critics, my works is pleasantly thought provoking and extrem altought accessible ( at least, for the moment being ) . It's also important that the audience feel challenged by what I do. I think that an artwork exists because it can engaged with someone. Viewers are never mentally still in front if my photographs, at least that's what I hope;
